Background of the study
Bilingualism significantly influences syntactic structures, particularly in regions where two languages intersect regularly. In Kaduna, the coexistence of Hausa and English has given rise to unique syntactic patterns among bilingual speakers. This study assesses the emergent syntactic constructions in the speech of individuals fluent in both languages. Research shows that bilingual speakers often develop hybrid syntactic forms that blend elements from both languages, influenced by cognitive processes and cultural factors (Muhammad, 2023). In Kaduna, factors such as formal education, media exposure, and community language practices contribute to these dynamic patterns (Aminu, 2024). The study will analyze spoken discourse to identify recurring syntactic structures, code-switching phenomena, and potential innovations or simplifications in grammar. By examining these patterns, the research aims to elucidate the interplay between language systems and the adaptive strategies employed by bilingual speakers, ultimately offering insights for language teaching and policy in multilingual contexts (Bello, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite growing interest in bilingualism, insufficient research has focused on the specific syntactic patterns of Hausa-English bilingual speakers in Kaduna. Existing studies have largely emphasized lexical borrowing and code-switching, leaving a gap in understanding the underlying syntactic structures (Sani, 2023). This gap complicates the development of effective educational and linguistic policies. This study seeks to systematically analyze the syntactic constructions employed by bilingual speakers, thereby providing insights into language integration and cognitive processing.
Objectives of the study

  • To identify and analyze syntactic patterns in bilingual Hausa-English speech.
  • To examine how bilingualism influences grammatical structures in both languages.
  • To explore the implications of these patterns for language teaching and policy formulation.
    Research questions
  • What are the dominant syntactic patterns observed in bilingual speech?
  • How does bilingualism affect the grammatical structures of Hausa and English?
  • What factors contribute to the observed syntactic variations?
    Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a detailed analysis of syntactic patterns in bilingual Hausa-English discourse. The findings will inform educators and policymakers, enhancing strategies for language instruction and preservation in multilingual environments while contributing to theoretical discussions on bilingual cognitive processes (Ibrahim, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to assessing syntactic patterns in the speech of bilingual Hausa-English speakers in Kaduna. It does not address other aspects of bilingual communication such as lexical borrowing or pragmatic features.
    Definitions of terms
  • Bilingualism: The ability to use two languages fluently.
  • Syntactic Patterns: Recurring structures in sentence construction.
  • Code-switching: The practice of alternating between two or more languages in conversation.
